Guilty Pleasures is the first novel in a long standing series by Laurell K. Hamilton. The Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Novels are Horror Romance novels set in a city called St. Louis. Anita is an animator, for a company called Animator Inc. she raises zombies for people so that they can say goodbye, ask questions of a long dead relative, or find out who killed someone. She is also on retainer with RPIT, the Regional Pre-Eternatural Investigation Team, or Spook Squad headed by Sergeant Dolph Storr.

Anita would love to avoid Jean-Claude, a master vampire at all costs, but he needs her help to oust the current Master of the City Nikolaous who is hurting her subordinates and generally not doing a lot for the vampire citizens of St. Louis. Unfortunately for Anita he does this by being more than a little deceptive, which she absolutely hates. He ends up applying the first two marks of becoming a human servant to her which make her immune to his gaze and some other supernatural mind tricks.

I had forgotten how Anita’s story started, and that she didn’t always have a good relationship with Jean-Claude. It has been great to re-read and I will hopefully do a review of every book in the series thus far. I can proudly say I own over half now, and keep purchasing the odd one on amazon and get them for birthdays/christmas too.

Update!!: I just read the comic book for this! Surprisingly it is still available to those who are under 18 in libraries, I thought due to the graphic nature it might not be. I was great, Anita wears so many things with penguins on it is adorable. My one issue is her scars look far more out if control that I picture from Hamiltons description in the novel, mainly the elbow (I think left) is like her whole arm in the comic but I suppose artistic licence.
